Au pairs in Fort Worth, Texas spent their weekend volunteering at a birthday pool party for children with special needs. The au pairs were inspired to volunteer after growing close with their area director’s special needs triplets. When they learned about this opportunity, they couldn’t wait to give these children an amazing event to end their summer. Au pair Maria from Colombia said,
I have always liked helping others and becoming someone's right hand. In my country, I love to volunteer. It is a passion of mine. The opportunity to help others, strengthens me and fills me as a person too. Volunteering teaches us to grow as people, value each day, overcome any obstacle that is presented to us, and know how to handle difficult situations.
Many of the party-goers were in wheelchairs or had other physical disabilities. The au pairs were able to give each of them individual attention and lend a helping hand to ensure they had an amazing day. The au pairs helped the kids swing at the pinata and pick up candy. They also helped to keep them hydrated under the hot Texas sun. In addition to providing an extra set of hands, the au pairs created mini photoshoots for the children and their families. Au Pair Carolina from Colombia stated, “It was gratifying to be able to help the children and see them overcome their challenges. Children with disabilities can have fun just like any other child. They taught me to enjoy life to the fullest."
The au pairs were extremely proud of the hard work and smiles they received from all of the children, especially their area director’s children. Everyone left feeling very happy and fulfilled with the day.
